Wildfire-Induced Changes in Flood Risk in Recreational Canyoning Areas: Lessons from the 2017 Jerte Canyons Disaster

Few studies identify potential hazards affecting canyoning. This activity has an increasing number of practitioners, and hence, a greater people are affected by natural hazards. Mountain rivers located in places subject to several hydrological hazards; the risks mostly connected with floods produced intense storms or dam operation, but changes factors may alter usual basin behavior given even moderate less severe storms. Data about flood events peak discharge 2017 two studied canyons were collected means quick field survey water levels after flood, modeling, soil analysis. The present research shows dramatic consequences two-year return period storm guided group canyoneers. A previous wildfire changed soil, leading hydrophobic conditions effects. Peak increased from 2 m3 s?1 normal 12 under regime related occurrence; moreover, reduction time concentration also occurred, pointing more powerful dangerous event. In this paper, some recommendations highlighted that will be helpful recreational canyoning management, safer practice.
